Red, White, and Blue and Fried Green Tomatoes

Alright, yall are gonna get a double whammy on Memorial Day! 🙂

In all my travels, I cannot think of one person who hasn’t watched the movie, Fried Green Tomatoes. Funny thing is….few of those people have actually made them! They are easy to make and even easier to get addicted to! Most people down south serve them with Ranch dressing, but when I worked at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, I was told to serve them with mustard! Serve them with whatever you like and don’t be afraid to experiment. Folks Folly in Memphis, TN once served theirs with Blue Cheese dressing. Why don’t YOU decide? Try this recipe and let me know what you like to dip your tomatoes in!

Hallie’s Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients:
1 cup Vegetable or Corn oil
1 Large Egg
4 Tablespoons 2% Milk
1 cup Martha White cornmeal
1 cup AP (all purpose) Flour
2 Tbsp fresh or dried Dill
*TT Salt
*TT Pepper
3-4 Green Tomatoes, washed and sliced

Directions:
In a cast iron skillet, begin to heat oil on Medium to Medium High. While the oil heats up slowly, combine egg and milk in a bowl and whisk until somewhat combined. In a seperate dish (I use a small glass baking dish, so I have more room.), combine cornmeal, flour, dill, salt and pepper. Dip one slice of green tomato into the egg/milk wash and dredge it through the flour/cornmeal mixture. Place in oil. If the oil is hot enough, it will bubble and begin the frying process. If it does not bubble, wait until the oil is hot before adding any further tomatoes. If the oil seems to be the correct temperature, repeat the dredging process and add more tomatoes to your frying pan. I fry about six at a time, but you can do as many as you are comfortable with! turn in about 3-4 minutes. If the oil gets too hot and your tomatoes seem to be cooking too fast, turn your stovetop down. Fried tomatoes should be a golden brown when they are ready to pull, but remember things are always a bit darker after you pull them out of the pan!!

*TT means “to taste” in most recipes.
