I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream For Snow Cream

Today, a friend reminded me of one of my grandfather’s best memories. My grandfather was and will always be the storyteller of our family. As children, we couldn’t wait to hear one of his “tall tales” about driving a truck, going fishing, his service during WWII, and sometimes, on rare occasions, he could recall his childhood in Kennett, Missouri. I can remember him telling me one of his fondest childhood memories was making Snow Cream. He loved Snow Cream and if it snowed, he would ask if I could make it. Living in Memphis, it was difficult to make Snow Cream out of what little snow we would receive. My mother and I would try, but the snow was often dirty or there was simply not enough. Until I moved to Kansas, my only recollection of “Snow Cream” is from my grandfather.

Two winter storms have hit us in the past week. I thought, “When life gives you lemons…make lemonade. When life gives you lots of snow…why not make Snow Cream? We have plenty of snow and in memory of my grandfather, I made Snow Cream. I miss him and his stories everyday, but am proud that I can remember him this way.

  • 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp Vanilla powder
