“Snowbabies”: Dutchbabies with Powdered Sugar

Dutchbabies-01Wichita, Kansas is looking like a Winter Wonderland right now. In the past two weeks, we’ve had the second “Worst Winter Storm” in history, Winter Storm Q. Just recently we survived a second blizzard, Winter Storm Rocky. Thankfully, it was predicted to be worse than it actually was last night. This morning is cold and bright! Looking out my window, homes, cars, even trees and fences are blanketed with snow. Light reflects off the snow, so whether it’s daytime or nighttime, Wichita seems to have constant daylight. It’s a truly beautiful phenomenon. Speaking of phenomenons, have you ever heard of a thundersnow? I’ve only seen one once here in Kansas, but I saw my second one last week! A thundersnow is similar to a thunderstorm, but instead of producing rain, it produces snow. To watch actual footage of Wichita’s 2013 Thundersnow, check out this video from CNN.

The video above was filmed in Old Towne Wichita, Kansas. It is filmed from the perspective of Lucinda’s, a locally owned and operated boutique.

So, what do you do when you’re snowed in and freezing? My family always cooked a hot breakfast to warm us up. Nothing says “comfort” to me like a hot breakfast.  This morning I decided to make “Snowbabies.” I’m not talking about the beautiful, collectible pins and figurines. I’m talking hot, thick, buttery dutch babies (also known as German Pancakes) with a little “snow” or powdered sugar on top. “Snowbabies” are easy to make and kids can sprinkle “snow” on their own pancakes and with your help, even create fun designs. I hope these warm your heart and your tummy. Have a great snow day and if it’s warm where you are, “Snowbabies” are also good with fresh fruit. Enjoy!

  1. Another cold winter morning and Bluebird got to try a Dutchbaby for the first time. A clean plate from her half, I think she likes it.
