Buffalo Wing Dip: The Ideal Dip for Football

If you are looking for a dip with some kick for football season, this is the one! A friend of my mother’s actually shared this with me and I made it today for a squadron “Hail and Farewell.”

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a proud United States Air Force spouse and my husband is part of a flying squadron. A “Hail and Farewell” is an opportunity for squadron members and their spouses to say goodbye to those proceeding on to bigger and better things and to welcome those who have moved into our squadron. It is very exciting and many people show up. Each spouse is asked to bring something. Otherwise, it would be costly to feed 90+ people. With my busy schedule, I needed something quick, easy, but that would feed a lot of people. Buffalo Wing Dip fit the bill.

So here’s the easy recipe with a few small changes to make it my own. Enjoy!

Buffalo Wing Dip

Ingredients:

  • 2 pkgs of cream cheese ( For a low-cal choice, use Neufchatel instead!)
  • 2 large cans of chicken, or 3 boneless chicken breasts, cooked and chopped
  • 1 cup wing sauce of your choice (I used Ken’s Steakhouse because it was all that was available. I prefer Hooters or Louisiana.)
  • 8 oz (half a bottle) ranch or blue cheese dressing
  • 8 oz (1 bag or half of a 1lb bag) of shredded cheddar cheese
  • TT paprika

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Then, in a saucepan, melt cream cheese on the stove top. While the cream cheese is melting, open canned chicken and drain the chicken. Use a fork to break up the chicken. If you are using pre-cooked chicken breasts, chop them up and set aside for the dip. Check the cream cheese. Once the cream cheese is easy to stir, add wing sauce and ranch or blue cheese dressing. Mix well. Add the chicken and shredded cheese. Stir until all ingredients are combined. I transferred this mixture to a large oval Corningware dish, but if you start it in a cast iron pan (mentioned in my previous blog) you can place the entire pan in the oven. Cook until the edges begin to bubble or for about 30-45 minutes. Top with paprika and serve immediately with celery sticks, carrot sticks, or chips! Enjoy!

This dip was such a success among my Air Force peers, both guys and gals. However, I never realized how difficult it is to find wing sauce in Wichita, KS until I went looking for it. I found one brand that I had never used before, Ken’s Steakhouse. I knew they made salad dressings, but I was skeptical of their wing sauce. (It was decent sauce, actually.) I walked up and down the aisle scouring for wing sauce that perhaps I missed. After the fifth time of walking down the aisle, I finally asked an elderly lady if she knew where I could find some. (Usually, my elders know more than I do.) She replied, “I’ve never made those in my life!!!! So, I can’t help you!” With wings being a staple in Tennessee and Mississippi, I assumed they would be popular here, especially with chains like Buffalo Wild Wings. Not true! With Super Bowl coming hard and fast, give this recipe a try! No matter where you are from, explore wings and the sauces that cover them! If you are like my grocery store helper, you are definitely missing out!
