Enid, Oklahoma, a Sight to See

Enid-1Hey yall! I’m writing from Enid, OK! Why am I here? Well, of course, it’s because of my husband and his adventures with the Air Force. No, we are not stationed here, but the visit has certainly been fun!

Enid-2Driving down 412 E to Enid, you will see fields and fence posts, but don’t let the rural atmosphere fool you. Enid is full of small town charm, kind, hospitable folks, good eats and iconic Midwest history. Although our time in Enid is short, we are scouring the town for restaurants that are “uniquely Enid” and offer good quality dishes and a few good tourist stops!

PaneVino Wine and Tapas Bar, On the Sidewalk Bar and Grill, and Napoli’s Italian Restaurant offer a surprisingly cosmopoliton atmosphere day or night. Callahan’s Pub & Grill offer what some call “pub grub” and great after dinner drinks! Looking for a light lunch place? Check out Port Lugano! It’s cash only, but if you forget, the owner Mary Beth won’t close the place down on you! She’ll kindly wait until you return from the ATM @ Walgreens around the corner. Mary Beth and her staff are not only hospitable, but also know how to make a mean cappuccino! In addition to their cafe style and amazing beverages, they offer mix and match lunch plates at a reasonable price. If price is a concern and money is a concern, Scheiber’s Donuts and Deli are low on price but big on flavor. Pick up freshly baked donuts, sandwiches and hot soup or order a loaf or two of bread or a homemade pie and pick it up at their drive thru window! There are many restaurants here, but these are a few of our favorites. Big thanks to the locals who steered us in the right direction. They truly make Enid a better place!

Enid-3Enid-4Speaking of which, there are a few “must see” places in Enid. I haven’t been to some of them yet, but my husband and I will definitely be back. (Perhaps visit Oklahoma City, too?) First, there is a newly built museum known as the Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center. It tells the tale of Old Midwestern Enid, the Cherokee Strip, and Chisholm Trail. Chisholm Trail Walking Tours are available every third Saturday of April through October, but reservations are required. Take kids to Leonardo’s Children’s Museum, Railroad Museum of Oklahoma or NOC Planetarium and Observatory for more educational fun! Meadowlake Park has fun for the entire family including an 18 hole golf course, miniature golf course ($3.00 per person makes it great fun for the price conscientious!), train rides and walking trails. Picnic areas are available also. For a taste of Enid, go to Indian Creek Village Winery for Oklahoma made wine and gifts in the gift shop. They also have a Bed and Breakfast available for weary travelers. Finally explore the boutiques scattered around Downtown Enid and in the Heritage Hills Shopping Center! The “Felt Bird” is a unique store that reminded me of the little quaint shops back home.

Enid-5I know this is alot of info, but I hope this brief guide to Enid will encourage you to stop (not drive by) and visit awhile. From one Southerner to another, this is the most welcoming town I’ve found thus far in the Midwest. Whether you are a local, a tourist, or military, Enid, Oklahoma has alot to offer. Just open your eyes!
